supplied a large number of fire apparatus to the City of Boston over the years. Very little ornamentation was provided during that period. This is due to the World War II war effort and the need to conserve certain metals. Very little chrome was used when it was manufactured. It is fully operational at this time, but is used principally for parades and displays. It was then housed in a firehouse in Brighton and was gradually restored over a seven year period. It served on Long Island for 30 years, until 1975. The only time it left Long Island was for maintenance. During its entire career, it never responded to a fire in the City of Boston proper. In 1951, a bridge was erected from Moon Island to Long Island, completing the access road (causeway) which leads from the Squantum section of Quincy to Moon Island. Due to the life hazard and the frequency of fire calls, Engine Company 54 was organized in 1945 and is still active today but identified as "The Fire Brigade".Įngine 54 was delivered to Long Island by barge, because there was no direct access by motor vehicles.
